MSA 2010-2011 In Session

We’re 1 week into a new school year. I’m trying to make sure I don’t get behind in marking the girls’ workbooks, like I did last year. They’ve been doing Math & Language arts independently for a while – and I found myself getting lazy in correcting their workbooks – and then finding to my horror that they’d done a whole section incorrectly, and going doh doh doh, BACK UP!!! And having to explain how to do it the right way.

Anyway, the first few weeks of a new math book is usually review of the previous year’s work.

Here’s a question I came across in my Grade 4’s math book this evening:

“You can solve the problem 5200-592-87-345-99 by subtracting the numbers one at a time. That means four separate subtractions.
Can you find a quicker way?”

Here’s my Grade 4 girl’s answer:

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry or both.  MS dad had a good laugh.  If you know this child, you’ll know why I’m banging my head.

Here’s to an exciting 2010-2011 school year!

I am still trying to figure out what else I can farm out delegate to the daddy. The girls are quite independent in a lot of their work (something we are working extra hard on this year), but I still would like to keep on top of correcting their work each day so we can work on any issues right away instead of a few months down the road. That takes a little toll on my mental health at times, as you may have read here. […]
